6 Happy Hour Wines to Try at Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza

04/10/2019

“Happy Hour“ is the few golden hours between a hard day’s work and a good night’s sleep. Isn’t this a rite of passage worth celebrating? We think so. And we think the best way to celebrate the hours of 3pm-6pm is with $2 off a glass of vino and half-priced tapas to share. If this sounds like a great plan, stop by your neighborhood Sammy’s for a post-work bite and beverage. And if you’re a wine lover, here are 6 must-try happy hour wines (and tapas they pair well with) to help get the party started.

White Wine

Sauvignon Blanc, Estancia, Monterey

This California-based wine has notes of lemon-lime and green apple with a clean and crisp finish.

Pairs well with: Sammy’s Pork Dumplings. Tangy foods won’t overwhelm an acidic Sauvignon Blanc, so it pairs well with the slightly tart Ponzu chili sauce that is served with our pork dumplings.

Rosé, Jean Luc Colombo, Cote Bleue, France

This French Rosé has a bright floral nose with notes of juicy fresh strawberry and cherry.

Pairs well with: Sammy’s Lobster Mac & Cheese. Pairing cheese and wine can be tough. Some cheeses pair well with a bold red wine and others with a delicate white, but mostly all cheeses pair well with a glass of Rosé.

Chardonnay, Toad Hollow, Mendocino County

This Chardonnay is crisp and refreshing with notes of peach, grapefruit, and citrus.

Pairs well with: Sammy’s Crab & Shrimp Dip. Chardonnay pairs very well with seafood or fish that is marinated in a rich sauce. Try a glass of Chardonnay with our Crab and Shrimp tapas or our Lobster Mac & Cheese!

Red Wine

Merlot, Robert Mondavi, Napa California

This bold merlot has juicy notes of wild blueberries and red raspberries punctuated with hints of cassis & Ceylon black tea.

Pairs well with: Merlots are fairly easy to match-make with food. They are so versatile and complement a wide range of flavors. Try it with Sammy’s Meatballs & Marinara or our Burrata, Prosciutto and Lentil Salad.

Pinot Noir, Rodney Strong, Russian River

Pairs well with: Sammy’s Mini Duck Tacos. Flavorful meats like duck need an equally flavorful wine to enhance its complex flavor.

Malbec, Diseño, Argentina

This bold Argentinian Malbec has juicy notes of plum, black cherry, and licorice.

Pairs well with: Sammy’s Thai Chicken Satays. Spicy foods are a perfect match for a medium-bodied Malbec like Diseño. They are bold enough to withstand foods that are spicy or flavorful.

If this list made you thirsty (and hungry) stop by one of our Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza locations to get your happy hour celebration on! Be sure to ask your server about what the Manager Special wines of the day are and what they pair well with.
