Unwind from your long day with a generous glass (or small bucket) of red wine. Not only does red wine make an excellent complement to many gourmet dishes, but it also boasts a few important health benefits. Let’s raise a glass to raising a glass of red wine—and four of its surprising health benefits.

Red wine may lower cholesterol

In moderation, a glass of lush red wine can actually raise levels of good cholesterol (HDL) by 5-15%. Both red wine and grape juice have polyphenol, an antioxidant that also helps lower bad cholesterol (LDL). Why is this good? Bad cholesterol ends up getting deposited in arterial walls and forces blood pressure to rise in order to pump blood through the narrowing arteries.

Red wine has heart healthy benefits

Researchers have linked resveratrol, a polyphenol found in wine, to preventing heart disease and a possible heart attack. Resveratrol can help reduce inflammation and make it hard for platelets to congeal and form clots. This is important because blood clots can lead to heart disease.

Red wine can help regulate blood sugar

Grape skin is rich in resveratrol, and so is red wine! Aside from being heart-friendly, resveratrol can help prevent insulin resistance, which is a precursor to diabetes. In studies, resveratrol takers not only saw lower blood glucose levels, but also overall lower cholesterol and systolic blood pressure.

Red wine may help slow cancer cell growth

The antioxidants in red wine may also play a role in preventing the spread of cancer cells. In moderation, red wine can help starve emerging cancer cells. Resveratrol may even trigger cancer cell apoptosis—cancer cell death.
